Can you still travel to Japan's Ski Fields in Summer?

While we love nothing more than to enjoy the Japan ski fields in winter we often get asked if the ski fields are open during the summer months. No matter what time of your you visit, Japan is always full of fun and adventure. Before you travel to Japan’s famous ski fields in the warmer months there are a few things you should know.

  1. There will be no snow
Just because you are travelling to the ski fields does not mean there will be any snow. Summers in Japan are hot and humid. While the snow fields transform into a summer adventure playground, don’t travel expecting to see any powder, it may seem like common sense but you would be surprised by how many people expect to see snow!

  2. Restaurants & Accommodation Close
During the warmer months many accommodations and restaurants/eateries close down. This is common every year, with many re-opening at the start of the winter season ready for the large influx of skiers and snowboarders who flock to the area. If you do decide to travel to the ski fields during summer you may find it hard to find places to eat and stay the night. Make sure you do your research before you go so you don’t caught out.

  3. Where the Locals Come to Holiday
The summer months is when many of the Japanese residents travel home to enjoy summer holidays. Many will spend time in ski regions enjoying summer activities such as hiking, cycling, golf and rafting. You will more than likely find the area full of holiday makers, research before you go to see if the area you want to travel to will be crowded.

  4. Double Check Transport
Getting around the Japan ski fields in winter is never a problem. There is always plenty of public transport around to make sure you easily get from place to place. Once the snow has melted and the ski season is over things start to wind down, including transport. Shuttle services often close making it harder to get around. If you do plan to travel during the summer months make sure you plan ahead and check travel options. You don’t want to get stuck without transport in an area that is closed for the summer.

Whenever you travel make sure you do plenty of research before you go as things change from season to season, especially if you are travelling to ski fields in summer time.
